Massachusetts State Exemptions

Homestead

Up to $500,000 for real property, including land and buildings.

Wages

Up to $125 per week.

Automobiles

Up to $700 for one vehicle.

Personal Property

1. 100 percent of necessary clothes, beds and bedding.
2. $3,000 for household furniture.
3. Bibles and books worth no more than $200.
4. $500 of tools, implements and fixtures.
5. $500 for materials and stock necessary for carrying on a trade or business.
6. Up to $500 worth of boats, fishing tackle and nets.
7. $125 of cash, savings or other bank deposits.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy is also known as “reorganization”. Persons filing Chapter 13 may own more property and by filing Chapter 13 may also keep most of their possessions.

In Chapter 13 bankruptcy, the individual draws up a proposal for a repayment plan for a term of 3 to 5 years, which must be approved by a bankruptcy court. This plan allows the individual debtor to repay outstanding bills.
